With the help of Ben, her secret crush and a faerie who has cast a protective enchantment over her to keep her safe, she goes in search of her parentage. Selkie Stewart finds out on the day of her seventeenth birthday that she is not only a faerie princess, but also half ogre. Yet, it remained fun and entertaining throughout in a madcap sort of way. Reading The Girl Who Never Was at first, felt like I was sitting at the Mad Tea Party, trying to keep up with the fast pace and follow the somewhat dizzying dialogue. ![]()

That novel was far more fluid and accessible than this latest while political concerns drove much of the story, the relationship between Corelli and the daughter of a local doctor gave the book an emotional core. I don’t remember seeing a review of this one, or any of the lesser-known novels, and it’s a pity because it’s rather brilliant. I think Orwell might fall in that category of author you don’t see mentioned that much in the blogosphere, simply because we all read him long before we started book blogs. Simply because it’s been on my shelves the longest, seventeen years, I took down Keep The Aspidistra Flying (1936) recently. ![]() I thought all of them were brilliant, and have had several others for many years. I’ve read the big-hitters – Nineteen Eighty-Four and Animal Farm – and I’ve read Homage to Catalonia. ![]() I’m actually thirty years further forward in The Prose Factory, but picking it up reminded me of its Orwell-dominance, which in turn reminded me that I wanted to read more Orwell. He’s obviously a significant figure of the 30s and 40s, but it’s astonishing how often Taylor manages to mention him. Like anybody with a private interest, some things loom larger than perhaps they ought – and with Taylor it is George Orwell. It’s called The Prose Factory, which isn’t a great title for a book that also covers poetry, but it’s certainly been interesting.
